Bodie - A Ghost Town - State Historic Park : Bodie, California is a ghost town east of the Sierra Nevada mountain Range and NE of Yosemite NPS. Bodie began as a mining camp when gold was discovered in 1859 by prospector W.S. Bodey. In 1876, the Standard Company discovered a large deposit of gold-bearing ore, which transformed the mining camp into a Wild West boomtown. Bodie had a population of approximately 10,000 during it’s heyday (1879-1881). At its peak there were 65 saloons and dance halls lining Main Street which was a mile long. Bodie had a Chinatown with several hundred Chinese residents and included a Taoist temple. Fire played a significant role in the downfall of Bodie. A disastrous fire in 1892 destroyed many buildings. While playing with matches, ‘Bodie Bill’ of 2.5 years, gained historical recognition for starting the 1932 fire which destroyed all but 10 percent of the town.

Today, the California State Parks preserves Bodie in a state of arrested decay.

Mono Lake Tufa State Reserve : The Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve was established to preserve the spectacular ‘tufa towers,’ calcium-carbonate spires and knobs formed by the interaction of freshwater springs and the alkaline lake water. The lake covers about 65 square miles and is over 1 million years old making it one of the oldest lakes in North America. Salts and minerals have washed into the lake from the Eastern Sierra streams. Freshwater evaporating from the lake leaves the salts and minerals behind so that they lake is now about 2 ½ times as salty and 80 times as alkaline as the ocean.
